Healing Honey from Crete

Day 1

Severe graze has removed skin.

I spread Pure Cretan Honey over the wound and then wrapped my leg with "cling film". Left it overnight. Removed and rinsed with clean water in the morning. The next night I repeated this treatment.

Day 3

I applied a large self-adhesive band aid with a smear of honey.

Day 5

Honey treatment continues.

Leg is a healthy pink colour.

No infection has occurred.

Day 7

No more honey required. Scabs are falling off.

Day 9

Scabs gone. Leg almost fully healed.

1 month later there was no sign of scars.

Why did you use "cling film"?

Honey has a tendency to "creep". It spreads everywhere. It soaks through bandages and band aids very quickly. Note that the "cling film" should not be applied for more than few hours. Allow the skin to "breathe" for several hours each day.

This honey also got rid of my friend's "athlete's foot" fungal infection.

I've also used it for this purpose. It seems to be effective against most bacteria and fungal infections.

The above facts are based on my own personal experience.

Use it for gum infections. It tastes nicer than most antiseptic mouth gels!

I have used it for this purpose (and my dentist agrees).

DISCLAIMER: I'm not a qualified medical practitioner so I can't guarantee that it will work for you.

How does it work?

Honey is fiercely hygroscopic, which means it sucks in water. Since bacteria are like microscopic balloons full of water, the honey sucks them dry, via a process called "osmosis", thus killing them. By the same mechanism (I suspect) it also kills or disables fungi.

In addition, honey seems to promote healing. I'm not medically qualified to say why but I'd guess that it's a combination of keeping the wound clean and dry (by its moisture-sucking action) and maybe some specific chemicals in the Cretan honey, which help the healing process.

Does it Hurt?

When placed on an open wound, the honey causes a mild stinging sensation for a minute (in my experience).

How Long does Honey Keep?

Because of its antimicrobial and antifungal properties, honey is the only food known to man that does not deteriorate. It will never go mouldy or become inedible, provided that it is kept in a jar with a lid. (Otherwise it soaks up moisture from the air and eventually dilutes itself, which renders it less effective.)

Does Honey Cure Leg Ulcers?

I haven't tried it. I think it might but that's just my opinion. I don't see how it will harm to try but, if in doubt, you should seek qualified medical opinion.

Does Honey Cure Acne?

I haven't tried it. I think it might reduce acne by killing bacteria and sucking the pustules dry by osmosis. But that's just my opinion. I don't see how it will harm to try but, if in doubt, you should seek qualified medical opinion.

Is Honey Good for a Sore Throat?

It does seem to sooth a sore throat. If you can get it to stick to the back of your tongue and throat for a few minutes, its antibacterial action might help. But that's just my opinion. I don't see how it will harm to try* but, if in doubt, you should seek qualified medical opinion. The Cretan people dissolve honey in "tsikoudia" (Raki) with cinnamon. They use this mixture for sore throats and colds. It doesn't cure it but, if you drink enough, you'll forget about it!

* If you are diabetic, please treat honey as if it were the equivalent of pure sugar.

Is Honey Good for Gingivitis?

I haven't tried it. I think it might but that's just my opinion. However, it might sting a lot and, if you have a cavity, it might hurt. If in doubt, you should seek qualified medical opinion.

Is Honey Good for Cracked Finger Ends?

My friend has used it for this problem and it worked for her.

If you have used honey, I would be interested to hear of your experience.
